  Scenic Swims

Ironman Course

Location: Kailua Bay, located right in the heart of Kona
Distance: 1/2 mile, 1.2 miles and 2.4 depending on ability
Duration: 1 1/2 to 2 hours (includes safety talk)
1-4 people maximum
Cost: $95 and up
Karlyn or Eric will swim or paddle right alongside while you swim a portion or the entire Ironman World Championship swim course in Kailua Bay.

The water is crystal clear with visibility over 60 feet and the temperature averages 75 degrees.  You will see colorful tropical fish, coral reefs and the occasional turtle (Honu) as you swim your way along the course.  You may also encounter Spinner dolphins since they have been known to visit the bay.

During the swim, we will offer suggestions to improve your technique and open water skills.  Depending on your ability, we will swim 1/2, 1.2 or 2.4 miles.  We often stop and point out landmarks, interesting aquatic life, and check to make sure you are comfortable.

If a fast paced workout is what you had in mind, Karlyn or Eric can pace you at just about any speed or distance up to 2.4 miles.  Karlyn holds the women's course records for 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile and 1.2 mile swims in Kona and has won the 3-mile La Jolla Gatorman swim numerous times (Eric is not too far behind!).

Swim with the Turtles (Honu)
Location: Kahalu’u Beach Park South end of Kona near Keauhou
Distance: 1/2 mile to 1 mile
Duration: 1 1/2 (includes safety talk)
1-4 people maximum
Cost: $85 per person
If you like to swim and be entertained by aquatic wildlife, then this is the swim for you!   Kahalu’u (Ka-ha-lu as the locals pronounce it) is a shallow, reef protected bay about 5 miles south of Kona Village at the end of Alii Drive.

After a safety talk, Karlyn or Eric will escort you around Kahalu’u Bay where you will see hundreds of tropical fish, colorful coral and turtles!  While you swim, Karlyn and Eric will offer swim technique suggestions and work with you to help you improve your stroke.  Open water skills, sighting and drafting techniques will also be offered.

If you are adventurous, we can take you out past the small breakers into deeper water to experience the ultimate in open water swimming...visibility up to 100 feet, coral reef, lava flows, tropical fish and more!

Big Island Scenic Swims:
The Big Island offers a variety of beautiful open water swimming locations including Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea Beach, 'Anaeho'malu Bay and Kealakekua Bay to name a few.  We are available to travel to any of these locations to conduct a scenic swim.  Please inquire.
Safety and Certifications:
Karlyn and Eric would love to share their love of the water with you on these scenic swims.  However, your safety is our number one priority, so every swim begins with a water safety talk about current conditions, the aquatic environment we are about to enter and what to do in case of an emergency.

Certifications: Karlyn in a former State of California Beach Lifeguard with over 13 years of ocean guarding experience.  She is currently Red Cross Instructor for Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Waterfront, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches Instructor, AED/Oxygen Instructor.

Eric has current certifications for Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Safety Training for Swim Coaches.
