Karlyn will swim or paddle right alongside while you swim a portion or the entire Ironman World
Championship swim course in Kailua Bay.
The water is crystal clear with visibility over 60 feet and the temperature averages 75 degrees. You will see
colorful tropical fish, coral reefs and the occasional turtle (Honu) as you swim your way along the course. You
may also encounter Spinner dolphins since they have been known to visit the bay.
During the swim, we will offer suggestions to improve your technique and open water skills. Depending on your
ability, we will swim 1/2, 1.2 or 2.4 miles. We often stop and point out landmarks; interesting aquatic life and check to make
sure you are comfortable.
If a fast paced workout is what you had in mind, Karlyn can pace you at just about any speed or
distance up to 2.4 miles. Karlyn holds the women's course records for 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile and 1.2 mile swims in
Kona and has won the 3-mile La Jolla Gatorman swim numerous times.

White Sands beach is one of the most picturesque small pocket beaches in Kona located about 4 miles south of
Kona Village on Alii Drive. This beach is also known as Disappearing or Magic Sands, because the sand disappears during the wintertime!
After a safety talk, Karlyn will escort you on a 1-mile swim south towards Kahalu’u Bay where you
will experience visibility up to 100 feet and see tropical fish and colorful coral. If you are strong swimmers, we will
swim one way, take a break with refreshments at Kahalu’u, then return to White Sands for a total of two miles of swimming.
While you swim, Karlyn will offer swim technique suggestions and work with you to help you improve
your stroke. Open water skills, sighting and drafting techniques will also be offered.
